What a Perpetual VCA Contract Actually Means for Your Approval Programme
Not all type approval routes are equal. We explain what KaM's authorised relationship with the VCA delivers in practice — and why it changes the timelines, certainty, and cost of a programme.
Most consultancies that offer type approval services prepare documentation and submit to whichever authority handles the application next. Their relationship with the approval body is transactional — a new application, processed on its merits, with no particular standing or recognition on either side. KaM's position is different. Since 2006, KaM has held a perpetual authorised contract with the Vehicle Certification Agency of the United Kingdom. It has no expiry date. No other Indian company holds this contract today.
What does this mean in practice? When a KaM-prepared dossier reaches the VCA, it arrives as a submission from a known, contracted, and trusted counterpart — not from an unfamiliar applicant in a queue. The VCA Quality Policy, agreed and signed by both parties in June 2024, formalises the standards to which both organisations hold each other. This is a working relationship maintained in practice, not simply a historical arrangement left to run.
The practical effect is visible in how the process runs. KaM prepares dossiers to VCA's exact requirements before anything is submitted — so the clock starts only when it should. VCA processes applications within 10–12 working days of successful testing and complete document submission. That turnaround is only achievable when the submission meets the standard on arrival. A disorganised or incomplete dossier does not enter a faster queue — it enters a remediation process.
The contract covers India and Southeast Asia. Through the VCA relationship, KaM accesses three distinct approval routes: UNECE approvals under E11 authority, EU approvals via VCA Europe SRL as both e5 (Sweden) and e4 (Netherlands) Technical Service, and GB type approval post-Brexit. All three routes, through a single authorised channel.
For a manufacturer, the value is not just speed — it is certainty. An application managed through an authorised, contracted relationship with the approval body carries a different quality of assurance than one managed through an ad hoc route. The knowledge that makes KaM effective is embedded in our processes and our documented history of hundreds of programmes — not concentrated in any single individual. That depth is what the perpetual contract delivers.
